1.7. Need for transfer to new version

Transfer to X-Road Version 6 began on 2 November 2015 and it is planned to be completed by mid-2017. The objective of X-Road Version 6 is to change the former security schema of X-Road and resolve ensuring the integrity of messages mediated on X-Road by using a qualified digital stamp (e-stamp). Furthermore, in order to retain the security of X-Road, it is necessary to get rid of legacy (no legacy policy) or programme code which is becoming obsolete, and to change administration system of members.

A further reason is a need to ensure the conformity of data exchange of X-Road to the Electronic Identification and Trust Services for Electronic Transactions Act (https://www.riigiteataja.ee/akt/EUTS). Therefore, it is necessary to change the methodology of ensuring the integrity of X-Road within the meaning that e-stamp certificates of members must be issued by qualified providers of trust services. E-stamp certificates must be bound to a secure hardware unit of signatures. Compared to software signature units, hardware units enable better cryptographic security and is obligatory from X-Road Version 6.
